The golden rule of those basking in their golden years is: Respect your elders.

I am a boomer, but I call bullshit on this hackneyed mantra. When I was a child and anyone in authority, be it a teacher, member of the clergy or my parents told me to revere my elders I nodded in agreement, even though I realized that most adults are not worthy of veneration.

Respect is a two-way street; it is not something that is bestowed automatically simply because someone is older. Respect must be earned, and I urge the younger generations to respect only those who treat them with respect and whose words and actions are worthy of admiration.

Case in point: Donald Trump

In deference to his prestigious office and advanced years should we treat Donald Trump with respect?

Does Trump treat anyone with respect? It’s a rhetorical question, everyone knows that he is vindictive towards his enemies, contemptuous of his allies, and disrespectful towards everyone who does not bow down before him.

Are Trump’s words and actions worthy of respect? Almost every word that emanates from his sphincter-shaped mouth is a lie, an obscenity or sheer lunacy. His every action is self-serving and calculated to enrich his bank accounts or burnish his brand.

Youngsters, please feel free to heap profanities on the steaming pile of human shit.
