I haven’t eaten children’s sugary cereals like Cap’n Crush, Cocoa Puffs, Count Chocula or Trix since I was a child, but in celebration of Pride Month I may purchase a box of “Together with Pride” cereal.
“Together with Pride” is your basic brightly colored cereal, it features berry-flavored rainbow hearts dusted with edible glitter.
This special cereal is a collaboration between Kellog company and Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). The cereal giant and the LGBTQ advocacy group hopes that the cereal will accelerate acceptance of LGBTQ+ folks everywhere.
On the side of the cereal box, Kellogg’s give children the ability to choose “he, she, they” or make up their own gender.
Children love rainbow-colored sugary treats, and they love to play games like making up their own gender, you’d think that parents everywhere would buy this special cereal, at least during Pride Month.
But the usual suspects are trying to cancel the cereal, because God forbid it might encourage children to be tolerant of gays, lesbian and transgender men and women. The Catholic organization American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property has started an online petition against the cereal, claiming “pro-homosexual agenda is rearing its ugly head in your children’s cereal” and calling the cereal “sickening and perverted.”
Fear not Catholics and evangelicals, your children may get a sugar high from eating this limited-time cereal, but they won’t turn into godless little communists.
We should applaud, not condemn, corporations that think outside the box and promote love, tolerance and understanding.
